The Translation and Publishing Support Program (LATE) awarded 250,000 euros to approximately 150 works by Portuguese-speaking authors. The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language, involves 45 countries, 35 languages, and 104 publishers, and aims to promote the internationalization of works written in Portuguese by authors from Portugal, Africa, and Timor-Leste.
Spanish is the most widely represented language, with 34 translations, many of which will be published in Latin American countries. It is followed by translations into English (15), Italian (13), French (12), and Greek (8).
Authors such as Fernando Pessoa, Lídia Jorge, and Gonçalo M. Tavares are the ones who generate the most interest among foreign publishers.
Camilo Castelo Branco, Luís de Camões, Mário Cesariny, Florbela Espanca, Mário de Sá Carneiro, Agostinho da Silva, José Rodrigues Miguéis, Alexandre O’Neill, Maria Judite de Carvalho, Wenceslau de Morais, Ruben A., and Soeiro Pereira Gomes are among the classic authors of Portuguese literature who will be translated into other languages.
In the realm of contemporary literature, we find authors such as Manuel António Pina, Dulce Maria Cardoso, José Eduardo Agualusa, Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, Maria Teresa Horta, José Saramago, Mia Couto, José Luís Peixoto, Valério Romão, Julieta Monginho, Teolinda Gersão, Tatiana Salem Levy, João Reis, Isabela Figueiredo, António Lobo Antunes, and Ana
Luísa Amaral, Paulina Chiziane, Maria Gabriela Llansol, Conceição Lima, and Afonso Cruz.
LATE also included translations of works by the Portuguese playwright Tiago Rodrigues and the architect Siza Vieira.
All accepted proposals will be reviewed by a committee composed of members of the Portuguese Writers' Association, the International Association of Lusitanists, the Camões Institute, and the General Directorate for Books, Archives, and Libraries (DGLAB).
